I’m not usually one to hang around art galleries but I did decide not to head to the pub this Friday night and instead I went to an exhibition in the Tate Modern, oh how cultured of me! And then went to the pub after! So anyways, the exhibition was a Japanese artist called Yayoi Kusama. I’d actually never heard of the women in my life but apparently she’s a mega deal in Japan. I can kinda see why!
There was definitely something really fascinating about her pieces. They were so weird and abstract but I actually loved them. All of them.Apparently she volunteered herself and lives most of the time in a mental home. She actually launched her career from there and set up a studio in the medical faculty. What a legend!
She created paintings, collages, sculptures and installations. Not just a one trick pony Polka dots are all over her pieces. She was born in 1929 so you could see the transition of her pieces from back in the day until now. One of the rooms where her work was displayed was covered in psychedelic polka dots representing her hallucinatory visions. The polka dots glow in dim light. I want some for my room In fact, I could stay in that particular room all day. Its like Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory only better! The room is named ‘I’m here but nothing’.
Another room was completed covered in mirrors and coloured lights. It was like a living dream. She looks like she lived and still lives the most epic life eva!
I think I have a new found love for art, a natural high! Thanks Kusama, I’m inspired!
